South Georgia Expedition 2005
|

PRESS RELEASE
"November 3, 2005 will see the departure of two West Country men,
Peter Bray and Jeff Allen, both men from Cornwall, are off to attempt
a circumnavigation of South Georgia. South Georgia made famous by Sir
Ernst Shackleton and his dramatic rescue of his crew in the small ships
boat ‘The James Caird’. Peter and Jeff are both familiar
with the hardships they will have to face on this expedition, in 2004
Jeff made a complete circumnavigation of Japan and Peter has been involved
in many adventures on the Ocean, the first successful crossing of the
Atlantic by Kayak, from Newfoundland to Ireland as well as circumnavigations
of Great Britain and Newfoundland. In 2004 Peter was awarded the Bronze
medallion for bravery when he saved the lives of the crew on the Pink
Lady, after the boat they were rowing across the Atlantic was struck
by Hurricane Alex, 300 miles west of Lands End.
The two men will also be accompanied by Hadas Feldman from Israel and
Nigel Dennis from Anglesey.
Anyone interested in following the expedition can log on to www.seakayakingcornwall.co.ukor
the expedition web site www.templarfilmssouthgeorgia.com
The team are hoping to raise monies and awareness of two children’s
charities, ‘Children in Crisis’ and ‘Ty hafon’
Children’s Hospice.
At present there are three teams lining themselves up to attempt this
expedition, one from New Zealand, an American team and our guys from
Cornwall, South Georgia due to its location and wildlife has been regarded
as one of the most extreme journeys to ever be attempted by Sea Kayak.
Millions of breeding Fur seals will make landing hazardous and the enormous
swell of the Southern Ocean will also have to be contended with, as
well as the dangerous Katabatic and Fohn winds created by the mountains
and Glaciers of South Georgia."
