Tuesday 29th June 2004 A newly published book has just landed on my desk... 'OILEAIN - A Guide to the Irish Islands' by David Walsh This is basically a gorgeous book, intended as a guide for sea kayakers heading out to the West Coast of Ireland. It's packed with pretty pictures, but if you manage to get past them you'll find some pretty clear and useful info on the islands themselves (over 300!) and the paddling conditions they offer. This is truly a labour of love, by keen paddlers for keen paddlers. The guide has been put together over the last few years by many Irish paddlers and is on the web somewhere in draft form...but I can't believe how well it has translated into a book. I've made a few trips out to that part of the world myself and the book ties in with my own recollections. Nice. So...order a copy...sea paddlers really do want to look at this book, whether you've been there or whether you haven't (this book will almost certainly change that). By the way, there is an equivalent book for the Scottish Islands, albeit not written specifically for sea paddlers...highly recommended. |
Sunday 6th June 2004 I just returned from a splendid week of sea kayaking on Skye, along with some coast/ hill walking based from the kayaks. Marvellous place if you can endure the midges and amusingly fickle weather. Anyone else been out on the water? Send us your trip reports and photos, all welcome... |
Saturday 22nd May 2004 Apologies that this site has been a bit dormant since the New Year (although the Community Page certainly hasn't...this is the heart and soul of the site and is the biggest UK sea paddling forum). Anyway, I'll try to stay a bit more on top of things now that summer is here. There are some great submissions below and more on the way, apparently. New article on towlines...recommended reading. New report on paddling the coast of Brittany. Article on British Columbia's Desolation Sound. A cautionary tale about paddling in the Firth of Forth. Mike Buckley has been through the Community Pages with a fine toothcomb, and has achieved the impossible...he has categorised links to discussions about popular and useful topics. A look through the new much-augmented Almanac should give you the general idea. New photos of the Purbeck Coast, here and here. Work avoidance... Seapaddler.co.uk - these folks have been busy. The site is partly commercial, partly useful info. A great resource already. Sean Morley's epic circumnavigation - what a nut. Well worth a look, but annoyingly you have to register and log in. The Secret Money Tree - great writing and photos from Simon Willis. |
